Another wonderful pose for fertility – cobra pose. It helps to tone the ovaries and uterus and regulate menstrual problems. If you’re feeling low and need a boost do this pose. As you raise your torso you squeeze into your adrenal glands which helps to calm the whole system and turn off your stress hormones.

Heated yoga and pregnancy. Is it helpful?

At one point I was teaching hot yoga as well as normal hatha yoga. I was teaching about 7 classes a week in this hot room (28 degrees, so not bikram hot, but hot enough). I had a great mentor who was working in this particular studio and I was keen to learn from him. When they offered me classes to teach I jumped at the chance. There is no doubt that teaching a dynamic practice keeps you fit. You sweat and work hard and you come out feeling the rush of endorphins like you’ve really worked out (this really is a sort of gym yoga, for those that don’t want to go to the gym but still want to sweat). But is this type of practice conducive for getting pregnant?
I’m often asked if it’s OK to do strenuous exercise when you’re trying to conceive eg. dynamic or hot yoga, gym sessions, running etc. My advice would be not to. Stick to all things gentle – yoga, walking, swimming are all great. We are trying to cool the body, calm it down and soften the belly (think of that beautiful round moon, the ultimate feminine energy). It’s about getting the flow going, the breath relaxed, the blood circulating – not practices that heat the body, tighten or strengthen.
When I finally realised that although it might be working on one level (ie. keeping me very fit), it wasn’t good for successfully conceiving. I changed so many things in my life, it’s hard for me to say what it was that made it possible for us to have our twins. All I can say is that when I finally did give up my heated classes I fell pregnant. Who knows if that was it, but one thing is for certain I’m sure giving up the heated practice helped.
2nd chakra. Let the juices flow…

The 2nd chakra which rules our fertility is a ‘water’ element. I like to think about it like a flowing stream moving down the mountain, light, playful and fluid. It’s all about movement and flow. Fear is the opposite to this. When we have negative or frightening experiences we feel stuck and tight, our breath is shallow and constricted. Spend some quiet time focusing on the breath – close the eyes, feel the air moving thru the nostrils, breathe from the belly count down from 10 to one. Slowly. The breath is key to getting the juices flowing.

If you’re doing IVF and wondering when your next cycle should be and how soon to start again, this is great advice. So often we feel we need to get into it again straight away, when often our body needs some time to settle and get strong again. Listen to that inner wisdom, don’t ignore it. Take a rest.
What to do for anxiety attack

Do you get anxiety attacks? When you speak to people who do, one of the most common symptoms is feeling that they are not able to take a full breath. To help, try focusing on extending your exhale as you do a side stretch on each side. Sit on the floor on a cushion, inhale through your nose and raise your right arm. Gently press down through your right sit bone and draw your arm over to the left as you exhale through the nose, palm facing down. Feel the gentle stretch in your right rib cage as you open your intercostal muscles. Breathe 6 slow breaths, repeat on opposite side. When you get more oxygen into your system you feel calmer, steadier and more balanced.
Speak your truth even if your voice shakes

In the course this week we were talking about how important it is to speak about what we are afraid of. In yoga be believe that if we don’t face our emotions and experiences we re unable to process them and then they are stored in the hips and pelvis, causing tightness in that region. Our Yoga for Fertility practice helps to bring oxygenated blood to the pelvis and opens up tight muscles so that we can positively impact the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. Even if it’s hard – try and speak your truth, get the tension out of your body so you can start to flow…
Ujjayi breath to relax

Are you feeling stressed? Use ‘ujjayi’ breath to help relax. Sometimes it’s called ‘seashell’ or ‘whisper’ breath. The reason we use it in yoga is that it helps to heat the body and release internal toxins – but at the same time it calms the mind. To practice ujjayi imagine you are fogging up a mirror with your breath but keep the mouth closed and breathe through the nose. You can feel a slight constriction at the back of the throat as you do this. You can hear breath as you move through the poses and the sound helps to keep the mind focused. Do 10 slow ujjayi breaths to find release for the body and peace for the mind.
Janu Sirsasana to help with anxiety

If you’re feeling anxious and are looking for calm, one of my favourite poses is Head to Knee pose (Janu Sirsasana). It helps to relieve stress by stretching the spine, stimulating the kidneys and calming the adrenal glands. If you’re finding it hard to sleep it can also help with insomnia. All in one pose – amazing!
Make sure the mantras you tell yourself come from you

Ever found this? Often what we believe comes from our upbringing, but it can be hard to have awareness of this. Think about mantras you might have heard of all your life and are so much a part of your thinking you can’t even remember not saying them to yourself eg. ‘life is hard’, ‘you don’t always get what you want’, ‘go for your career, don’t worry about family’ etc. Make sure it’s really you who really believe these things and not someone else.
The healing power of a yoga ‘sangha’

Really looking forward to the second class of my group course tomorrow morning. The course is full and there is such good energy in the room. There is something very powerful about a group of women coming together with a common purpose – in yoga we call this a ‘sangha’ (‘group/assembly’). Beautiful feminine energy.
